Introducing Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

We're excited to announce that we now offer Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) massage at A Good Life Massage Therapy!

MLD is a specialized, gentle massage technique that has incredible health benefits. Whether you're recovering from surgery, dealing with swelling, or simply want to support your immune system, lymphatic drainage massage can help.

What Is the Lymphatic System?

Before we dive into the massage technique, let's talk about what the lymphatic system actually does. Your lymphatic system is a crucial part of your immune system. It's a network of tissues, organs, and vessels that work together to:

  • Remove waste and toxins from the body
  • Transport infection-fighting white blood cells throughout the body
  • Maintain fluid balance by draining excess fluid from tissues
  • Absorb fats from the digestive system

Unlike your cardiovascular system (which has the heart to pump blood), the lymphatic system doesn't have its own pump. It relies on muscle movement, breathing, and manual stimulation to keep fluid flowing.

What Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

MLD is a very specific, gentle massage technique that uses light, rhythmic strokes to stimulate the flow of lymph fluid through the body. The pressure used is much lighter than a typical massage — think the weight of a nickel on the skin.

Despite the gentle touch, MLD is incredibly effective. Each session follows a specific sequence, starting at the lymph nodes near the collarbone and working systematically to direct fluid toward the nodes where it can be filtered and processed.

Who Can Benefit from MLD?

Post-Surgical Recovery

MLD is widely recommended after cosmetic procedures like liposuction, tummy tucks, BBLs, and facelifts. It helps reduce swelling, minimize bruising, and speed up the healing process. Many plastic surgeons recommend MLD starting a few days after surgery.

Lymphedema Management

For people with lymphedema (chronic swelling due to a compromised lymphatic system, often after cancer treatment), MLD is a primary treatment method.

General Swelling and Edema

Whether from pregnancy, standing for long periods, or other causes, MLD can help reduce swelling in the legs, ankles, and other areas.

Immune System Support

By stimulating lymph flow, MLD helps your immune system work more efficiently. Many clients get MLD sessions during cold and flu season as a proactive wellness measure.

Sinus Congestion

MLD techniques applied to the face and neck can help drain congested sinuses, providing relief from sinus pressure and headaches.

Detoxification

MLD supports the body's natural detoxification processes by helping move metabolic waste through the lymphatic system more efficiently.

What to Expect During a Session

An MLD session is very different from a typical massage:

  • The pressure is very light — this isn't a deep tissue treatment
  • The movements are slow and rhythmic — designed to match the natural rhythm of the lymphatic system
  • You may need to urinate more frequently afterward as your body processes the extra fluid
  • Many clients feel deeply relaxed during and after the session
  • Drink plenty of water after your session to help flush the system

How Many Sessions Do I Need?

This depends on your goals:

  • Post-surgical: typically 6-12 sessions, starting a few days after surgery (with surgeon approval)
  • Lymphedema management: ongoing regular sessions as part of a treatment plan
  • General wellness: monthly sessions can help maintain healthy lymph flow
  • Immune support: sessions as needed, especially during cold and flu season
